Born and educated in England, I started taking photographs at the age of 11, when my parents gave me a Kodak bellows camera. I became a more serious photographer after taking a course with David and Cheri Hiser in Aspen, which opened my eyes to the fact that abstract ideas and emotions could be communicated by a photograph. There is an old Eastern saying, “When the pupil is ready the teacher will come,” which has been true for me. Although largely self-taught, I have taken courses with Ernst Haas and Sam Abell, both great teachers as well as photographers, and whose work I admire.
On moving to Vermont, I started my own company, Upcountry Publishing, and for over 30 years produced a unique line of postcards and notecards. I exhibited photographs widely in northern New England and beyond and have photo murals on three floors of the New York Law School Library.
I also published a book, Water Colours, a photographic essay on water, matching abstraction with landscapes. The book captures images of what is impermanent: the effect of light on water, with its many moods, rhythms and colours. As I have traveled from my native England to places of great beauty throughout the world, I have grown to understand the calming and restorative powers of water. Available for purchase: $25.00
